Campy Xenon Brake/shifters levers with Shimano 7 speed Exage rear wheel

I read a while back (little over a year ago) that you can mix Campy and
Shimano on your drive train.

Here's what I would like to do.

I have a sport touring bike I am overhauling. I really like the cleaness of
the Campy Brifters design as tey don't have the shift cable sticking out and
getting chafed by a handlebar bag. All I need to change are the Brifters and
chain. I was thinking of getting a pair of Xenon Brifters due to the lesser
cost than Mirage at c$190 Cdn.

What I need to know is can I get 9 speed Shimano spacers that will fit the
cassette on my Exage hubs?

Also is there much difference in quality/longevity between Xenon and Mirage?

For what it's worth I ran an Exage 300 with my Mirage Brifters on my racing
bike when I toasted the Veloce rear derailleur and chain when a strap fell
into the chain and was carried back to the derailleur which then promptly
rode back and up until it was stopped by the cogs. The outside body of the
derailleur snapped in two and the chain twisted 180 degrees. Thank goodness
the cogs were unharmed although the hanger was also twisted slightly.

Are you saying that you was able to run "an Exage 300 with my Mirage

rear hub/cassette (I recommend shimano 9 chain too) and you're off.

Usually, the easiest way to "mix n' match" is to use Campy 9 ergo shifters
with Campy 9 rear der and shimano 9 hub/cassette and chain. That works well
for me. But if you got Campy 9 ergo shifters to work with shimano 9 rear
der, more power and have a good ride!

Almost. Actually the Exage 300 rear derailleur was from a 14 speed Gardin.
It worked every bit as well as the Veloce! I didn't notice any difference in
quickness or precision of the shifts. I probably would have left it on
except I bought the long cage Veloce and put on a Triple front 28-38-48
until I can afford the Mirage triple.

Amazing huh?

What I meant in the OP was can I use the 9 speed spacers on a 7 speed hub
as I don't want to have to buy a whole new wheel and cogs as well. If I go
that route (plus cost 4 the chain) I will be nearly half way to the price of
an aluminum frame bike with Shimano Sora drivetrain and Brifters. This is
much more than I want to spend or need to as everything else on my Sport
Tourer is in great shape. I really like the Brifters as I can keep both
hands on the bike while shifting.

Need to also get a Campagnolo rear der, any of them. The innards are very
different from Xenon to Mirage, with Mirage sharing most of the innards of all
the groups above it, including Record. Xenon, designed to be OEM, on par with
Sora/Tiagra, is much different, but certainly useable. I think the ability to
repair(find parts) plus upgrade to 10s would make my choice Mirage ERGO.
