Route advice: CBD to Box Hill Tafe
Guys,
Mate at work studies at Box Hill and rides a bike. Currently he's using the train to get to Box Hill, please advise on feasibility and routes for riding. He rides a flat bar road bike with 23mm tires so good bike paths / roads. Ta :-) -- Cheers | ~~ __@ Euan | ~~ _-\, Melbourne, Australia | ~ (*)/ (*) |

Two main options that I can see:
Whitehorse road, he's going against the traffic. When you get to the kew junction you can choose between going left to get to bridge or the boulevard at burnley or down the back streets of richmond and through east melbourne, can't name all the streets but basically you can go all the way to punt on one road between bridge and victoria. Would suggest against going down victoria because of the cutting and the traffic at the other end. Longer way - eastern freeway bike path. Can't fully explain the end of it to the city. |

Best jump off it (on the citybound leg) at either Kew North bridge (as you go past the swanky Golf Course with all the expensive cars) and take back streets of Kew past the junction to Johnston St and down Walmer St (so much better than riding up it), or when you hit the Kew Boulevarde follow that to Walmer St or Johnston St. DaveB |

Or, as is mentioned, the scenic route via the eastern freeway trail - join it at the end of the yarra boulevard (kew end). Melways for further info He rides a flat bar road bike with 23mm tires so good bike paths / roads. The eastern trail is sealed all the way. Just to throw another one in the mix - this is basically the reverse of my ride as I live just down the road from the TAFE and worked in the CBD for some years: Albert St around the Fitzroy Gardens, south down Clarendon, and then east along Hotham all the way to Hoddle St. Zip across the ped crossing and head down Highett St. south down Gardner and east onto Bridge Rd.. Follow that across the river, up Church St-High St to Kew Junction and continue on until Harp Junction. Hop on the bike path east-bound there which will take you through to Burke Rd, then Gordon St all the way to Balwyn Rd. Cross and take Yarrbat through to Union Rd. Then Erne/Kenmare Sts which will take you to the TAFE. It's an odd route, but one which has served me well for many years - Not too out of the way, but avoiding the major roads when convenient to do so. -- eddiec |

Once you get to Burke Rd in Camberwell, take Sackville, Wellington and Stevensons Sts through Kew to get to the Yarra, or alternatively, Rathmines, Liddiard Sts Hawthorn to get to the Yarra near Hawthorn station. Then just follow the Boulevard to the city. Pat -- vaudegiant |
