It was a follow-on to your inanity. I think it is called a dependent clause.

Alas, I no longer read books. All I do these days is just scan text on the
computer. Education and the reading of books is for the young. By the time
you get to be my age, you know all that you want to know. In the end, one
despairs of knowing much about anything. It is the old, old story of Faust,
but no Marguerite for me.
