It takes a pretty lively acid to clean out the hot water tank and there's a big market in limescale removing bog cleaner. They usually contain either hydrochloric or phosphoric acid. |

There is also almost 13 million cubic kilometers of saline groundwater. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is placed in layers from settling out of water. If you find limestone there isn't much water close by. |

Lime scale can be removed at about the same rate it is deposited by water. Decades. Generally you want to do that faster and so they use highly acidic compounds. |
