Default Bicycle sales leave motors in the dust


Article in (the last place you would expect it!) the 'Drive' section of
today's Age!!!

"According to Australian Transport Safety Bureau figures, there were
more than a million bikes sold in the 2002-3 financial year".
Cars wil ONLY (estimate) sell 960,000.
Goes on to talk about safety/accident figures related to cyclists.
26 killed in 2003 (that high? thawt it was lower...)
Cyclists account for about 2% of road deaths (isnt that almost
identical to our poportion of trips??? ) and about 11% of
seriously injured each year (now that seems disproportionately high on
our part )
Says other stuff too but being a 2-finger bandit on the keyboard,
someone else can tickle the plastic!

I wonder how severely the interpretation of purchase stats are warped by
people like me who bought three bikes in one financial year...

I bought 5 cars in the last year. Company cars. They count. No company
bicycles bought during this period, but one of our empoyees started riding
to work this week (because the judge told him not to drive his car).

These stats are not very surprising and nothing to get excited about. It
does not represent some sudden bicycle awareness or ecological tsunami. In
the USA bicycles outsold cars every year from 1900 to 1970 (last year I
heard the figures). That doesn't mean there are more bikes than cars on the
roads.

Which reminds me of something that I was once told and that was that
most cars on the road are company cars, which, if correct, means that
many more people own bicycles then cars.

Default salary sacrificing a commuter bicycle in Australia

Who do you have to root to get salary sacrifice concessions for
commuter bicycles?

I did a bit of googling, found an article from the
UK about it being allowed over there if the primary use is
commuting. Found nothing about it in Australia, though.

Sadly, even if it were allowed, it would attract FBT, which would mak
it as attractive as buying a bike yourself. The FBT rate on moto
vehicles falls successively at 15000k/yr, 25000k/yr and some highe
level as well that I have forgotten. Alas, I'm going to come up jus
short of 10000 on the bike this year...

Don't talk to me about tax bills!

..and more importantly the mileage these bikes see.
Even though more of us are riding more often (regardless of Bicyclin
Vic efforts – not that there is anything wrong with that, if that’s wh
you are…) a lot of these bikes rolled outa the bike shops hardly get an
kms on them.
I bump into some guys here at work (big office in the ****ty) who sa
they’ve got a tricky roadie or full susp MTB etc, tell me all abou
what it’s got, the level it’s pitched at etc, but when I go into coo
places to ride/best tracks/routes etc they go kinda quiet – “.nah
don’t have the time what with kids/work/goin
out/partner/family/training etc”.

To be honest I don’t get that much spare time to go out for a ride o
my smick MTB, which is why I commute to/from work on my other dung
chromoly s/spd MTB, try & fit in riding to get other things done – se
mates, visit the folks, etc. Maybe even fit some nice detours in to
where I can
