HRM question
I've decided to regain fitness by doing laps of Centennial Park here in
Sydney, using my trusty old Polar s150 to set the pace. Even though it has a bike mount (and gives readings for speed + distance), I've never seriously used it on the bike, mainly for jogging. So my aim is this: keep a fixed speed (between 25-30kph) and keep my heart rate in a high zone (around 75-85% of maxHR). The course is quite flat, with only slight uphills/downhills. My problem is this: On the slight downhills, my HR drops off, and my speed increases above the park speed limit (30kph). If I drop a few gears and pedal like buggery my HR goes up a bit, but not enough. On the slight uphills, my HR goes a little bit too high. Should I drop a gear (and pedal faster), or go up a gear (and pedal slower)? I tried experimenting over 10 laps, but could not work out the best technique. Anyone got any advice? - Munk3y |

Quite simply, you can't keep your speed constant and your heart rate constant on the Centennial Park circuit. Choose one or the other... Ritch. PS. I was a little put-off initially because a cyclist acknowledged the speed limit in Centennial Park -- |

Except perhaps limits of friction which have now and again proven important. Zebee |

I'm the limiting factor on my slick-shod hybrid, not any damn arbitrary sign! -- A: Top-posters. Q: What is the most annoying thing on Usenet? |

Got one! Sometimes you just have to throw a line in... I was only joking. The limiting factor for me is the slope of the hill - the speed limit on public roads is usually too high for me to worry about on the flats. (Though Centennial Park has a 30km/h limit) Ritch -- |
