9 speed chain on 10 speed crank
Has anybody run a 9 speed chain on a Shimano 10 speed Dura Ace or
Ultegra crankset? I think Shimano says not to do this, but wondering if it is possible upgrade crankset and not everything else. What is the difference in chaingring spacing between a 9 and 10 speed? Thanks - Joel |

The spacing of the front sprockets is the same for 7/8/9/10. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. Some gardening required to reply via email. Words processed in a facility that contains nuts. |

9 speed chain on 10 speed crank
Hi Joel, I just recently upgraded to an Ultegra 6600 (53-39) double, and
did run into some chain compatibility issues, so here is what I learned: First off, my bike has a full Ultegra group, with a 9-sp cassette, and these new cranks replaced my Truvativ Rolleur compact (50-36) that had come stock on the bike. The short answer to your question is yes, you do need to run a 10-sp chain with a 10-sp crankset. While I can't comment on comparative chainring spacing between 9 and 10 sp cranks, I can tell you that after installing the Ultegra cranks and throwing on a new SRAM pc-59 chain (a 9 sp model), I immediately noticed that the chain would rub quite severely when I had the bike cross geared in the front 39T ring, up through the 12, 13, 14, 15T rings on the cassette. This rub was not from the chain hitting the derailer, but instead from the chain rubbing on the inside wall of the front 53T chainring. This issue was remedied simply by taking off the 9-sp chain and replacing it with a 10-sp (a KMC x10). The chain rub went away instantly (although it still does rub slightly when it's completely cross geared out in the 39-12, which is understandable). So, while a 10-sp chain is a bit more expensive than a 9-sp, it is a necessary part of the upgrade it you want to retain the full range of gearing on your bike. Well, good luck! I hope my experience helps make your crank conversion a happy one. Joel wrote: Has anybody run a 9 speed chain on a Shimano 10 speed Dura Ace or Ultegra crankset? 9 speed chain on 10 speed crank
David,
So you are using a 10s chain with a 9s cassette. I thought that was a problem, is it working ok for you? Yes it makes sense that the 9s chain would rub on the big ring assuming the 10s chainrings are closer together. Thanks for sharing your experience. 9 speed chain on 10 speed crank
Yes, using a 10-sp chain will work just fine on a 9-sp cassette,
however, the 10-sp's narrowness (as compared to a 9-sp) may require you to adjust your rear deralier tension to get things shifting properly. Thanks - Joel Not significant...no need to do anything, just put crank on, adjust front der, go ride. |

I guess the idea of chain to big ring rubbing in gearing that is duplicated by shifting to the big ring and bigger cog deosn't inspire me to use a more expensive, thinner by 1mm, 10s chain on a 9s cogset. I haven';t tried this, 10s chain on a 9s shift system since there is not reason to do so...but I may try it if two bikes are both needing chains at the same time, 9 and 10s...but again, Sram 9s chains work so well on so called '10s' cranks, shimano, Campag, FSA, Truvativ, I see no need. |

You'll notice more remarkable difference between the front shifting than the rear cassette by using different chains. Different design of chain will upshift faster and release to lower rings cleaner for less chain drop. It's most noticed when setting up compact, road cranks. I still haven't figured out all the voodoo of getting it perfect and just use Jump Stops. |
