practise, practise, practise...

freemounting the giraffe is one of your nastier realisations that
learning to ride a uni may or may not have been the most difficult thing
u've learnt this year

i also use the wheel/pedal method when mounting my 5ft
remember the functions of those steps
the foot on the wheel stops the wheel from rolling while u get to stand
straight up on the wheel
practise just that for a while
until u can stand on the wheel for a couple of seconds
it feels waaay out of control at first but with some practise u'll find
the stability u need to continue with the mount
this is also the first step to finding the correct angle of the machine

if u fall forward while standing on the wheel, lean it back a fraction
before u start the mount
if u fall backwards, lean it forward

from there, your next step is to get your (strong foot) on the pedal
your weight on this pedal will (like the foot on the tyre) prevent the
machine from rolling out from under u while u attempt the patently
impossible ,-)
practise the first two steps of the mount as a unit
wheel, pedal, stand
try n get your body as straight as u can, full weight on the pedal
it is vital that the hand holding around the saddle post lets go as soon
as u have that foot on the pedal
get someone to check that u r doing this
leaving that hand there for a second too long will bend your body over
too far and your balance will be gone

once u have that pretty stable, swing your other leg over the saddle
it's important to get into/onto the seat b4 trying to get your other
foot on the other pedal
one hand still holds the front of the seat
when u r in the seat, get the other foot onto the pedal, kick it back a
1/4 turn or so (as u would in a normal roll-back mount) and ride off

screaming REALLY loudly is allowed on your first succesfull freemount

now it gets weird
when attempting the mount, look straight up just before u go and imagine
a giant vacuum cleaner tube hovering above u, about to suck u straight
up
breathe out and when u r about halfway thru the breath, GO!
(this prevents u from taking and holding a deep breath as we r used to
doing before tackling something really difficult. this 'freezes' up the
upper body making u stiff and unwieldy and not the ideal body for
mounting a giraffe)
breathe out, relax and go
if u ever see circus performers freemount the giraffe (including that
one idiot who does it on a highwire in a cirque de soleil show), note
the bouncy, flowing HUP!, HUP!, HUP! rhythm

it's a flowing move in three stages and it takes a lot of practise
enjoy
