Letter to the Editor of Sydney Morning Herald 19/7/04

Don't you just love google? They'll let anyone (even an anonymous

coward)
post from their server...

WTF ? Has he done something wrong to deserve this mini-spray ? He
just posted a letter from a news paper and offered no remarks to label
him a coward ? Or have you two got a prior thing going and are just
looking for a bit of flaming and trolling ?

Ahh, I see you're also posting from google...

You win! Don't know exactly _what DaveB wins, but he's have posted the
best post on this rapidly degenerating thread.

BTW - Anyone inspired enough to pen a rebuttal to the Sydney papers?

Already done. This is what I said...

Dear Ed,

Referring to Jenny Ward's letter dated 19 July that groups all cyclists
as being selfish, mean-spirited, dangerous and aggressive. It is this
kind of letter that engenders an "us versus them" mentality and does
nothing to contribute the debate of finding solutions to Sydney's
traffic problems. There are some cyclists that break the road rules,
there are also pedestrians who step out on to the street without
looking. Should we look to register pedestrians with a competency
certificate that confirms their ability to walk? There are also some
motorists who drive through red lights and speed, especially in places
where there are no cameras. This does not mean that all motorists and
pedestrians are selfish and mean-spirited as Ms Ward's bizarre logic
would imply.

Perhaps Ms Ward can put on a helmet, lights and a bright jacket and
have a go at riding to work in peak-hour traffic so she can see how
selfish and mean-spirited cycling is for herself, rather than sniping
from the comfort of her car.

Alan

I realise that, my post was aimed at D R Sole. I included your post
to follow in context. It can become confusing, but it's become my
policy to only top post to D S Sole's (the troll) posts. He needs a
lesson in manners :-)

For and Against 4WD's - From The Age - Letters July 19, 2004

4WDs - the embodiment of hyper-materialism

The recent backlash against four-wheel-drive or sports utility vehicles
(A3, 13/7) is most certainly justified, however it focuses mainly on
environmental and safety concerns.

What is not mentioned is the utter self-indulgence and excess that
these vehicles represent.

SUVs are an embodiment of the hyper-materialism so prevalent in today's
society. No longer can car-buyers be content with an economic, modest
vehicle; they now demand the biggest and the best, citing it as a
lifestyle choice.

The actual specifications of the vehicle seem to matter little; it is
simply the superficial need to own one that does matter. This type of
materialism is no longer just the desire to own physical things, it is
now the desire to own an abstract notion of "lifestyle" - something
that goes beyond practicality and is purely and simply cosmetic.

What sort of lifestyle is a suburban family with two children hoping to
suggest to others when they drive around in these menacing machines?

There is nothing wrong with people "utilising" them in the manner for
which they are intended - sports-style driving on rough terrain - but
using them to pick up the kids from school or to go shopping is plainly
ridiculous.

No one should be condemned for their choice of lifestyle and everyone
has the right to consumer choice.

However, when this is motivated by such meaningless desire, and has
such a powerfully negative effect on the environment and road safety,
restrictions need to be put in place. It is a sad sign of the times
when we see people choosing cars based on purely artificial marketing
concepts such as lifestyle.

Do you really need that much metal?
Lawson Fletcher, Torquay

In defence of four-wheel-drives

Let's look at some facts: four-wheel-drives made up 18.1 per cent of
passenger sales in 2003, up 1.1 per cent from the previous year, and
they have fewer accidents than other passenger cars per
kilometre/vehicle travelled. They pay less import duty than passenger
cars, but this was part of the Button Plan to rationalise import
taxes.

Seventy-five per cent of four-wheel-drives are in the compact class,
ergo they use less fuel than a standard passenger car. Drivers have
better vision and fewer accidents as a result. It is true that
four-wheel-drives are more likely to roll over than other cars, but
only if they are driven at dangerous speeds around corners.

Also, a four-wheel-drive has a lot of step-up room, and can carry the
kids, the netball team and the shopping. Best of all, it can tow the
boat, horse float, caravan and finally, if you choose the dream, you
too can travel all over Victoria in it and even venture into the wilds
of Australia.

Ooooh, i want the same drugs he's on! His 'reality' is so mouch
better...

They might have a better vantage point, but do you think they are
'LOOKING' !?!?

Sadly untrue. many 4WDs have the same if not less interior room than a
conform-adore!

These would be the same 'compact' 4WDs capable of such miraculous
feats(?) would it???

Trivia. MC lives a few blocks away from me and is notorious in the area
for running red lights in his 4WTruck when 'nobody is a around'.
Even thinks it OK to drive thru the greythorn primary school crossing.

Letter has gone to the Age...
