Valve Exender Question
Howdy folks. I've got a pair of Spinergy Rev-X tubular wheels that require
a valve extender for my Tufo tires. As those who use valve extenders know, you have to leave the valve open before you attach the extender to the valve. But for me, this results in a loss of pressure in the rear tire. Have any of you ever dealt with this? If so, how did/do you solve this problem. Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Philip |

Valve Exender Question
I think the tire or it's valve is defective, or perhaps there is dirt
or somethign holding the valve open -- that doesn't happen to me. And the fact that it only happens with your rear wheel suggests the same thing. JT Thanks for the response. I'm not sure what you mean. I thought you have to leave the valve wide-open before you attach the extender, else you can't pump up the tire once it's on the rim. |

Sorry, by "holding valve open" I meant something preventing it from being closed by air pressure from inside the tube, even though it's unscrewed. Yes you have to leave it wide completely unscrewed, but it shouldn't leak air -- the pressue in the tire will keep the valve sealed (closed, even though it's screwed open) and it shouldn't lose air any faster than if screwed shut. If it does, there is a problem with that particular valve. JT **************************** Remove "remove" to reply Visit http://www.jt10000.com **************************** |

I thought you have to leave the valve wide-open before you attach the extender, else you can't pump up the tire once it's on the rim. Air shouldn't leak out of the valve even when it's "open" because air pressure in the tube pushes the core out and seals it. If you are losing pressure in this one tire, there is a problem in the valve that is not simply the result of it being in the "open" position, or in the tube. Used to use Rev-X wheels myself and did not have leakage problems with valve extenders. Cal |

Could you use the extender to pump up to full pressure -- then remove it and close the valve -- and then replace the extender on the /closed/ valve? You'd just have to re-assemble the arrangement to add air... Clincher Bill |

Valve Exender Question
its very easy to check
pump it up to pressure, check the extender tip if air is coming out (wet finders with soap and seal the opening) if no air is coming out then there is still a slight possibility of air escaping from the joint (but very unlikely). In that case your tire may have a puncture. How fast is air leaking ????? If the air was coming from valve you may have bent the screw valve or the rubber ring inside is bad or something is preventing it from closing all the way. remove the tire and check. Dont throw the tufos away you can fix the valve if the core is removable. after repair a a tad of grease to the valve before you add the extender and use a pair of pliers to tigthen them dont crush it). |

My Tufos have removable cores, so I bought Tufo extenders: they allow the valve to be reinstalled at the accessible end of the extender. But for me, this results in a loss of pressure in the rear tire. Have any of you ever dealt with this? If so, how did/do you solve this problem. I use teflon plumber's tape on the threaded joints. It's also possible your valve stem is slightly bent; I've known that to make the valve's locknut press against the inside of the extender. That prevents the valve from seating and so air gets out. To fix this I've either carefully straightened the valve stem, installed it at the accessible end of the extender or replaced the valve. |
