paint

I am looking to touch up my steel forks where some paint has peeled, what
is the best stuff to use bearing in mind durability is more important than
what it looks like. I asked in my LBS and they said 'try a paint shop'...

I'd sandpaper the peeled bits and use Hammerite: durability is good, and
it may also end up looking bad enough to act as a thief-repellent.

(My bike has a *lot* of Hammerite on it, along with variously-coloured
insulating tape, drop bars and mudguards. Not sure what else I could do
to it to make it thief-repellent.)

Best place to get metal paints that will be weatherproof is some
combination of DIY shed or auto parts dealer. Car paint is built for
just the job you have if you would prefer it to be the same colour,
otherwise Hammerite. Clean up the application area thoroughly, removing
any old paint and rust before you start painting and it generally works
best if you use a purpose built metal primer

If a really tiny chip, nail varnish (it's not a good paint, but it
comes with handy built-in applicator and is available in a range of
colours).

Otherwise hammerite, preferably teh smooth one rather than teh
hammered one - very tough, and tolerant of poor surface prep.
