Default Driving to rides -- how far will you go?

For all of you who travel to do organized rides, how far will you drive?
Will you drive there and back for the day, do you prefer to stay
overnight, etc? How far for either?

Most longer rides start very early, plus a lot of people would
rather relax in a hotel room than drive home after a hard century or
whatever.

The only organized rides I do these days are brevets, and I drive from
St. Paul to Rochester MN for those, about 75 minutes. I prefer to sleep
at home if I can, but the 600K starts at 6 AM which would mean leaving
St. Paul about 4:15 AM. Sheesh. So I'll stay at my brother-in-law's,
which is about 15 minutes from the start the night before.

What the hell is it with morning people, anyway? Bike rides starting at
6 AM? Oughta be against the law.

You sleep in 'til 6 AM? Egad, what a slugabed!

BTW, I'm driving 80 miles to the Utah MS-150 this June. Anybody who'd
like to contribute to this worthy cause e-mail me at the address below and
I'll tell you how.

I've driven a couple of hours away lots of times. Ottawa to Montreal
mostly. Anything further,, I've stayed in a campground near the event.

Tim--Maybe not a law but at least locks on the tent flaps could be a
requirement. I've done the MSTram a few times and can not believe how early
some people are out and about. Sheesh!!

Depends on where the century is? If it is nice town with good restaurants
and other things to do, we might spend a couple of nights there and make a
weekend out of it. If it is a boring town, we probably won't do that
century. There are lots of interesting rides closer to home.

If I'd have to get up earlier that 5:45am to drive to the ride, I'd either
head out the night before or skip the ride. I'm just so not a morning
person.

But after the ride, I want to get HOME. I routinely ride in the Sierras
(northern California), heading out the night before, finish the ride maybe
5pm and drive the 4 hours back afterward.

And why is it that the people who host bikes rides always seem to think
that leaving at dawn is a good idea?

Because, if you don't live in the frozen wastelands of the north, it
usually is?

I've travelled to a few long distance rides that offered overnight
accomodations before the start. This was a bring your sleeping bag
arrangement in a school on the gym floor. Between the folks arriving
at midnight and not feeling any compulsion to keep the noise level
down for those around them clearly trying to sleep, and those getting
up hours in advance to check all their gear, I would have gotten more
sleep in my car. Not to mention the flatulence aspects!

As far as how far I travel, I try to prioritize local events, but
there are a few key events that I do each year that are from 200 to
600km away. But all the other rides are much closer.

Joseph
