He made it to Lille on the first day as the lanterne rouge, then abandoned on the way to Charleville. Charlie Holland also started the Tour that year, along with Burl and the Canadian Pierre Gachon. Gachon didn't even make it to Lille. Holland survived until the *triple* stage 14. Stage 14a was a short 99k sprinters' roll from Perpignan to Bourg Madame. Stage 14b went 59k and brought them to the Pyrenees at Ax les Thermes where Holland finished DFL. Stage 14c went into the mountains to Luchon. Not that it mattered to Holland. Bob Schwartz |
