Default Touring in eastern Europe

I'm cycling to eatern Europe this summer (rough route is head for
Ukraine and circle back through Romania, Bulgaria and the former
Yugoslav states).
I am interested in recommendations on bike security for the trip. Most
of my previous touring has been hostelling in fairly quiet areas, so
I've only carried a light cable lock. This time I will be camping
(campsites and wild) and I guess that at some point I will have to
leave the bike unattended in some larger cities and towns, even if
this is only for short periods.
I'm trying to travel as light as possible, so I would prefer not to
haul a heavy D-lock with me.
Any opinions or recommendations about security?
I would also appreciate any specific touring tips about eastern
Europe.
Thanks
Ken

I take a D-lock and cable even in France which is very safe. Without your
bike you're stuffed. I also chain my panniers to the racks, although they
could still be emptied. Paranoid or what?!

Just because you are paranoid, it doesn't mean they are not out to get
you ;-)

for the more paranoid, you could try locking your panniers to the bike
using a pacsafe, used for attaching rucksacks to other objects to avoid
them and their contents being stolen.

i always carry a d-lock and cable lock.
