Yikes. That guy got really lucky.

We routinely (for John B.: regularly) push our luck when riding towards
Placerville:

But there's only slow and tiny excursion trains on weekends. They'd wait
until you are safely out of the way. The last big old "real" train
lumbered through there in 1986.

I wuz sucked into a rally video yesterday...looks like driver training. The truck accidents are truly formidable ...oddly videoed as well.

but you now cyclists do that everywhere right now in downtown Madison...as tourists in Florida.

There are signs entering Fla

ALL OUT OF STATE TRAFFIC LAWS INCLUDING DIRECTIONAL SIGNALS STOPPING AT STOP SIGNS ARE SUSPENDED FROM HERE ON

Video he

https://ca.screen.yahoo.com/near-mis...065236717.html

Lucky he hit the side of the train and that he wasn't a couple of seconds faster/sooner or he'd have been hit by the front of the train. In the second camera view you can see him really take a tumble and hit the rock or concrete.

Cheers

I'll bet that, in a sense, this guy's life was saved by aerodynamics.

High speed trains are very aerodynamic, with fewer protrusions and
smoother surfaces than other trains. With an ordinary train, I think
there would be a much bigger chance of some protrusion either impacting
the guy, or even hooking his bicycle and tossing it and him very violently.

Watch the video and you'll see that the guy was tossed very violently and looked like a rag doll being thrown.

I saw that. I was visualizing what would have happened if, say, a
prodtruing part of the train had hooked the front wheel of his bike. If
the train had protruding parts, that is.

Well, yes but Frank makes a good point about the smooth
shape. On the freight trains of my grandfather's roundhouse
days, the cyclist would have been chewed up to hamburger
from multiple pointy grabby things.

Now you know where the term "Meathead" comes from. Earbuds and loud music tend to take your attention from the road. But dollars to donuts he won't make that mistake again.
