Default Grizzly vs. roadie

I figured if any animal attacked any biker it would be a mountain lion
after Joerg's mountain bike.

Here's a grizzly attack on a road (or maybe gravel) bike and rider.

Wolves are sometimes also not very cyclist-friendly.

On my rides through the boonies I am less concerned about mountain lions
but more about bulls. They are out there grazing. If one of those gets
p....d off by the racket on an MTB it could become iffy. I also had
close calls with bucks. Mostly inattentive or maybe love-blind ones
running around distracted but once I accidentally got between a buck and
his sweetheart. He was not amused by that.

Bears generally give birth in January and the cubs may stay with the
mother for as much as 2 years. If the above bear had cubs the attack
may have been due to perceived danger to the cubs rather then as
simple aggression.

A grizzly bear can run at about 35 mph for short distances :-)

Here in Switzerland it's not bulls but rather cows grazing along with
calves ("Mutterkuhhaltung"). If the cow thinks you are endangering her
calf she will attack. Every year or two there are reports in the
newspaper of a hiker being killed in such a situation. For myself, I
want to leave at least 30 meters or so between me and the cows, and
sometimes have decided to just turn back rather than risk going through
a herd of cows and calves blocking the way. Going through a herd of
older cows or cattle is no problem--they will just move aside to let you
pass. You just have to try not to breath in one of flies in the cloud of
them that is always surrounding the cows.

A Brown Bear is not a Grizzly. And it is very unusual for a brown or black bear to attack an human. What might have happened was that it was a mother bear who felt her cubs in danger.

Wolves normally run from a man and not the other way around. So you have to wonder what was going on. Did the wolf have rabies?

Who knows? It might have simply been hungry. After a mountain lion
attack out here the rangers said that the cat had clearly exhibited
predatory behavior and that this can happen when the lion runs out of
other more regular food options. Maybe like the Donner Party.

Hmmm
"Taxonomy: While there has been much confusion about the
taxonomy of brown bears (Ursus arctos), taxonomists agree
there are at least two subspecies in North America -- the
grizzly bear (U. a. horribilis) and the Kodiak bear (U. a.
middendorffi)."

The Brown Bears I saw were smaller and with a hell of a lot less muscle around their shoulders. You could scare them off like a black bear by looking large and making threatening noises. If you left food in your car they could smell it and try to get it. So much for your paint job.

Grizzlies were very visibly different so I'm not sure what is being described in your references. The ones I saw were in Washington, Idaho and Montana..
