FSA Carbon Pro Cranks and Pedal Washers
I purchased a pair of used FSA Carbon Pro cranks recently. These are
the older model with the more subdued graphics. With the cranks came a new set of aluminum crank bolts (which I tossed aside in favor of some steel ones I had from the isis bb I bought to go with the crank) and new pedal washers. The cranks have some wear on them, so I am assuming that for whatever reason, the seller had to purchase a crank bolt/washer/etc... kit when they sold the crank. I already have an FSA Energy compact crankset so I am aware of how the washers are supposed to seat around the pedal eye. With these cranks (carbon pro), however, the left side crank arm has a slightly raised area of carbon around the pedal eye which would interfere with the washer. The drive side aluminum insert is flush with the carbon and large enough to support the washer. To the heart of the matter: given the above, I am assuming that the washers were simply provided with the crankarm bolts/torx wrench/etc... as a standard package and really aren't supposed to be used with these arms. Am I mistaken? The FSA install instructions that the seller included do not mention the washers - nor does the .pdf from the FSA website. Thanks for your time- App |

Thanks for your time- App The pedal inserts are aluminum, and the shoulder of the pedal spindle butts against it like all crank/pedal interfaces. It has been discussed here much and the conclusion is that pedal washers have no good effect unless they are much softer than the surface they're trying to protect. But then that causes other problems. Included or not, I would leave them out. Robin Hubert |
