If it's not 16-gauge gas-pipe tubing, it's not a Varsity.

I always thought it would have been a cool marketing scheme to put the
Varsity name on something superlight and high-quality. The ultimate inside
joke.

If I see some made in mainland China [1] bicycle shaped object with
"Schwinn Paramount" stickers on it, I will lose it.

The SCHWINN Varsity was an almost bombproof ten-speed "sport" bike that
was perfect for riding to school (Schwinn's original idea?), work and
general "beating around town". But not much else.

It's also, I bet, the route hat led a lot of us into more serious
cycling :-3)

It's Denali.

I spell Evian backwards as well, if you get my drift.

Tom, Do you have a barf bag? If not, next time you (or a friend) are an
airline passenger, you better pick one up and carry it with you. Is it
Chinese goods in general or the desecration of the Schwinn name in
particular that you find most troublesome?

Personally I avoid buying goods produced or distributed under unfair labor
practices. A Chinese bike at WalMart fails my test on both accounts. I can
understand a poor American buying a cheap Chinese bike; but why would a
person pay to support profits generated through oppressive, coercive,
unsafe, polluting industries in a place where human rights, let alone worker
rights are ignored when s/he can afford not to?

complain about high prices. I dont care how many chinee suffer to make
my $79 bike.

There should be some respect for tradition and heritage, so the
Paramount [1] name should not be used on a bicycle of less than premium
quality.

I also prefer to buy products made by people earning a living wage.

Moving production from the US, Europe and Japan to places like mainland
China undercuts the standard of living for other workers (real wages
for all but upper management have fallen for the last 3 decades in the
US).

Your opinion is shared by many people, including the buyers for WalMart.
The only difference is you're willing to say it out loud--or in black and
white in this case. I appreciate your candor (no joke. I mean that.)
