Problems with inner tube rubber becoming brittle over time?
After getting a succession of 8 punctures in 8 days on an inner tube
that i bought 5 months ago and trying to work out the cause, I gave up. I replaced it with a new inner tube and... not a puncture for 2 weeks. My suspicion lies with crap, cheap, chinese rubber used for the inner tube that aged badly over a short lenght of time and was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. Regards, Larry |

blurted oot this wisdom: After getting a succession of 8 punctures in 8 days on an inner tube that i bought 5 months ago and trying to work out the cause, I gave up. Regards, Larry No punctures ever, but then I've only been cycling for 4 months. :-) However, I wanted to throw in another related question. What do people here think of solid Green Tyres? Are they a viable alternative to pneumatic ones? Was just curious, and I have no affiliation with this company - http://www.greentyre.co.uk/ -- My dynamic calendar - http://www.1r5.net |

Could be a piece of loose crap in the tyre, bad luck, or possibly the wrong sized inner tube. No punctures ever, but then I've only been cycling for 4 months. :-) However, I wanted to throw in another related question. What do people here think of solid Green Tyres? It was impossible to fit, even with the special tool. I returned to tyre to the shop for a refund. |

There is almost certainly a piece of glass or a nail or a thorn stuck in your tyre. Feel round the inside of the tyre with your finger tips. When my little sister died I inherited her bike which hadn't been used then for about twenty years. It's still in use now and the inner tubes still haven't been changed so they're at least twenty eight years old. They're fine. |

They transmit far more vibration and have far poorer road holding. They're also solving a non-problem. If your tyres are pumped hard enough, punctures are rare enough anyway not to be a significant problem - I haven't had one since March, and that's about two and a half thousand miles ago |

They've been highly polarised, all of them being either very good or very bad. Upon investigation, the good ones have all turned out to have been written by the manufacturers. I've drawn the conclusion, therefore, that they're probably very bad. In particular, it seems that your bike will rapidly end up with lots of loose bolts. -- Danny Colyer http://www.redpedals.co.uk Reply address is valid, but that on my website is checked more often “If two men on a job agree all the time, then one is useless. If you use a bike more than occasionally, for any sort of distance, the disadvantages of reduced comfort and grip outweigh the advantage of never having to inflate them. If you're particularly bothered about punctures there are pneumatic tyres that offer very good protection without the disadvantages of a solid tyre. |

I wouldn't have thought that the sort of damage associated with ageing would lead to punctures - IME ancient tubes split or become porous, but not more susceptible to punctures. It's the tyre that should be providing puncture protection anyway, the tube just holds the air in. Most likely there was a problem with the tyre or rim. |
