Uninsured motorists.
People complain that cyclists have no insurance but what about
motorists, who are much more dangerous? "A suburb of Bradford is named today as the 'uninsured driving capital of Britain' with nearly half the motorists there driving illegally without cover. Every second motorist (49.5 per cent) in Barkerend in the West Yorkshire town is uninsured - the highest concentration of uninsured drivers anywhere in the country according to a post-code map of the problem. They are among 1.7 million people across the UK who are driving uninsured, according to shocking new research published today by the Motor Insurers' Bureau. It comes as the number of uninsured drivers soars by up to a third as a result of the recession..." I imagine your opinions of such people is not much different from the majority (for a change). They are committing a criminal offence, and deserve to be caught and punished. Anything else? |

The average £200 fine for driving uninsured is cheaper than the average insurance premium of £400. |

But as the average fine is less than the cost on insurance, they will continue to do it. Perhaps seizure of the car might help, but many of the uninsured cars are almost worthless it might not help. Perhaps a fine of at least twice what the insurance would have cost? BTW, not all cyclists are insured. -- Tony Dragon |

I'm not sure whether the Police could catch and prosecute any uninsured drivers without using methods that people like you are vehemently opposed to. Roadblocks? ANPR technology? Fixed/mobile cameras? Reported by neighbours? Surely uninsured drivers have the right not to be photographed, searched for on a database or stopped by the Police for a documentation check. Or do you agree with those methods because they are catching people who are committing offences that you don't like? What's the best way for the Police to proceed here do you think? |

The victim of an uninsured motorist faces a stiffer penalty than the average uninsured motorist. It is inarguable by reasonable people that some reform is needed for dealing with motorists who drive without insurance. Cutting off the goolies of uninsured drivers is a solution of which I am sure we can find a consensus. |

What you want is a system that is impossible to evade. What is the one thing you must have if you have a car? Fuel. So scrap the requirement to have insurance and put a massive levy on fuel to fund a centralised universal insurance scheme. |
