I know that there are many reasons for this (safer cars, more rules, better roads etc), but slowing trafffic due to increased congestion possibly also plays a part. In our case, introducing 20 mph zones has made a huge difference. See:http://www.publications.parliament.u...0102/cmselect/ cmtlgr/557... There are also more traffic lights and bus/cycle lanes than in the 1970s, which restrict traffic flow, also more motorways mean fewer pedestrian deaths. I tend to treat the road toll stats with some caution though, as the stats are easily massaged by the government to look better. It also ignores the fact that road crashes are a major cause of death among young adults. Some stats are not easy to massage eg numbers killed. True young adults form most of the "testosterone brigade" -- An oft-repeated lie is still a lie.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Correct and that is why the insurance for a young man of 17 can be £5000 a year at least, whereas with Saga I pay just £200. -- Simon Mason |
