Radial vs 3 cross
Dear Wheelheads,
Any advantages, other than perhaps aesthetic, to a radially spoked front wheel? Thanks Ed |

Wiseguy. You know that with radial, there's a better chance that a squirrel can make it all the way through before reaching the fork. Qi doesn't get confused or diluted. If it were to take a wrong turn on the way to the ground (for all Qi must be grounded) you could end up having tacos for dinner, when you meant to have bacon slicers. http://www.taiji-qigong.co.uk/Free_T...gua_qigong.htm http://tinyurl.com/6aap9z "they knew how movement affected the body and mind so that the Qi or 'energy' would circulate at a balanced and constant rate, thus bathing each internal organ in life-giving Qi" In this analogy, the hub is the lower dan tian, with the rim being the upper (recall how you are supposed to hold your tongue during correct qigong). Spoke crossings "short circuit" the Qi, causing an early return, and weakening. This is easily demonstrated by how frequently the flanges break on radial-laced hubs (real, ultimate power) vs. semi- tangent (like a cat licking its anus: no power or grace). |

Radial vs 3 cross
Ed Sullivan wrote:
Any advantages, other than perhaps aesthetic, to a radially spoked front wheel? Disadvantage: Radial spokes put hub flanges at higher stress than crossed spoking because each spoke pulls outward on the smallest cross section of the flange and have been known to burst that section releasing from one to three spokes. With steel flanges it is probably safe to spoke that way. Crossed spoking makes the spokes look roughly like pulling your index fingers when linked to one another. The resultant radial force is smaller, because only one spoke is stress cycled at a time. If a spoke breaks, as they did often with poorer spokes, the broken spoke tends to be retained in the wheel without lashing about. Jobst Brandt |

Some hubs do not have sufficient flange to sustain radial lacing, and the manufacturers of those hubs do not guarantee them for radial lacing. -- Michael Press |
