what is that little peg, on the outside of the chain ring, just under
the crank arm, for?

[shimano 600/ultegra, double chain rings]

Dear W,

The peg keeps an over-shifted chain from falling all the way down off
the big sprocket, just as a chainwatcher keeps an over-shifted chain
from falling all the way down off the small sprocket.

That way, you can get the chain back on the sprocket without having to
stop and fuss.
