Zipp 440
I have the opportunity to buy a used Zipp 440. I already have the matching front wheel. Any thoughts as to whether I should buy the rear wheel? What is a fair price? Will I actually be any faster or will I just look cooler?
Thanks Steve |

That is what I thought but I still need to get the Darth Vader Aero helmet Steve |

Looking cool is of course paramount, regardless of what type of bicycle you choose to ride. That is what I thought but I still need to get the Darth Vader Aero helmet As for going faster it depends what wheel you are replacing. Whatever the wheel whether or not you will notice is doubtful unless you intend to time trial. Even then unless you go to a full disk the benefits of the back wheel are low compared to the aero benefits of other kit. You getting a "Darth Vader Aero Helmet" will give you much more of a benefit than your proposed wheel purchase. This link gives you a broad indication of the aero benefits of different kit: http://cyclingtips.com.au/2010/04/bi...ial-equipment/ Also do not forget that decent tyres and tubes can make a noticeable difference and are a lot cheaper than quite a bit of the kit in that list. TRY http://goo.gl/zB4Jem Oh well I do intend to TT. In fact, that and hill climbs are my major goal this year. To that end I got a skin suit & Shoe covers. I already had aerobars. If I buy the wheel I will have to put on a new & decent racing tires. The wheels on the bike are what it came with 18 spoke Bontragers. I would never consider buying these new as nobody is paying me to race. However, this seems to be a chance for a friend to clean out his garage, make a little $$ and me to make a cheap upgrade. I think if you want to upgrade a bike the best place to get the most for your money is with better wheels. These seem like a good upgrade to the ones that you have. Whether or not you will be faster is largely up to you but lighter wheels can't really hurt on climbs in my opinion as long as they're good wheels. A good set of wheels with a crap set of tires doesn't make a lot of sense. YMMV. |
