I'm off to the track tonight for the Keirin and on the program is the mens 40k pts race ... yesterday I was in a bike shop in SE Melb when a CG rider from OS with a good sun tan came in looking for track gloves ( white golf gloves do the trick you know- leather and cheaper)...anyway he let it slip he was riding the 40k tonight , had never ridden track in his life before this week and had no idea about how to ride in a bunch either, or what the points malarky was about OR ( get this ) how to *stop* his track bike..( you hit something..doh!)... and..he reckons he's one of many!! so any country with a rider called "Eddy the Eagle" who puts his hand up or is press gang volunteered seems to be able to get a ride at the CG if their local country CGF enters them... So maybe there will be some nasty unnecessay smashes once the track werjens get out there...sparks will fly, blood may flow, anger my reach fever pitch...! Hopefully the top riders will be so far in front and too experienced to worry about the road bumps littering the track...hopefully! -- rooman |

I think that just highlights the disparity in resources btn countries. Sport and sporting events like the games work to gloss over the inequalities in resourcing and support for a lot of countries participating. And ulitmately, thats what the Comm Games are about - participation. It wasnt that long ago the Games were only for the rich white commonwealth countries. -- warrwych |

It be would interesting to know what country he did come from as most Commonwealth countries are very poor and I would highly doubt have access to cycling track facilities. Anyway lets hope he does manage to stay upright. |

I know it's a bit harsh to say it was not worth timing, but it is a bit hard to believe that the best someone could do for 500m in elite international competition was an average of 21.5km/h (if I got my maths right)! In fact, it was so hard to believe that I went to the games web site to check and could only find record of 5 starters with the worst time being 36.104. Is someone taking the ****, or am I looking in the wrong place? Brian |
