Parking Fine
This little gem was posted on uk.legal.moderated. Is anyone familiar
with this particular road? "dave @ stejonda" wrote in message ... In message , Ian Henden writes "dave @ stejonda" wrote in message ... So we gave you cycle paths. Pity not all of you use them. insert grateful prostrations here Many cycle facilities unfortunately are designed so badly that they create more danger - the Blackfriars Bridge lane for instance - see http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,1222797,00.html If I were to use the cycle path nearest to my home I would lose the right of way at every side turning - making for painfully slow and frankly dangerous progress. Not familiar with that cycle path, but there is an excellent one ascending Otterbourne Hill between Winchester and Chandlers Ford. New surface. Segregated from highway by stout wooden fence. No side turnings The highway itself has been traffic-enraged with the installation of unnecessary islands, and being narrowed, with chicanes (downhill side), to facilitate the construction of the cycle path The path is MUCH safer, MUCH smoother, MUCH wider than the space available to them on the roadway if a car is overtaking them there, and NO longer than going up the roadway And STILL the lycra-clad louts pedal up the hill, on the roadway, wobbling all over the place, obstructing other road users. There is insufficient distance for a heavy vehicle labouring up the hill to overtake a cyclist on the roadway, between islands. But the cyclist shouldn't be there anyway .... It is "cycling without due consideration for other road users" - and ought to be an offence. |

"dave @ stejonda" wrote in message ... snip Not familiar with that cycle path, but there is an excellent one ascending Otterbourne Hill between Winchester and Chandlers Ford. New surface. For now. This is the figure set aside by HCC annually for the sweeping and gritting of off-road cycle lanes: £0.00. That's reason enough for me not to use it. Segregated from highway by stout wooden fence. From a cyclist's POV, this is not the Good Thing that you seem to think. No side turnings I think you'll find there are. The highway itself has been traffic-enraged with the installation of unnecessary islands, and being narrowed, with chicanes (downhill side), to facilitate the construction of the cycle path And the result is that on the narrower lanes, a cyclist is much more able to 'take the lane' and prevent motorists from overtaking unsafely. The path is MUCH safer, MUCH smoother, MUCH wider than the space available to them on the roadway if a car is overtaking them there, and NO longer than going up the roadway And STILL the lycra-clad louts pedal up the hill, on the roadway, wobbling all over the place, obstructing other road users. Just how much road delay is caused by cyclists? Congestion caused by cars is the problem round South Hampshire way, I think you'll find. There is insufficient distance for a heavy vehicle labouring up the hill to overtake a cyclist on the roadway, between islands. But the cyclist shouldn't be there anyway .... This has been well discussed; a cyclist has every right to be on the public highway. Just as cars have no obligation to use a motorway where one is provided at great expense. It is "cycling without due consideration for other road users" - and ought to be an offence. Well, it isn't. If you mean "due consideration for maximum speed" it never will be. Ah. Cobblers. Just noticed this isn't cross posted back to where it came from. I'll let the OP take the argument up over there, then. |

Yup - I've followed it up. There was another "gem" after it which was so
laughable I decided to leave it - the author did more for the cycling cause by appearing such an anti-cycling twit than any rational comments from me could ever do! Alongside it is an excellent motorway (the M3) built exclusively for motor vehicles. And STILL the carnage on wheels mob insist on driving on that road trying to overtake where there isn't room and harassing other road users. But they shouldn't be there anyway..... Its driving without due consideration for road users and ought to be an offence. Ban them to their exclusive motorway ghettos I say. /parody Tony |
