Default Remembering Anquetil

"He was a sporting god to the French, one of the greatest cycling champions
in history. Yet, only now is the truth about Jacques Anquetil being told.
Unable to have a child with his wife, he had one with her daughter from a
previous marriage, and lived with them for 15 years before the arrangement
collapsed in unhappiness and betrayal... Not only that. After Anquetil was
abandoned by his wife and the mother of his child, he then invited his
stepson's wife, Dominique (who bore him a son, Christophe), to become the
mistress of his Normandy chateau. The disclosures have shocked a nation that
thought it knew everything about Anquetil."

On 18-Jul-2005, smacked up and reeling, "Callistus Valerius"
blindly formulated
the following incoherence:

"He was a sporting god to the French, one of the greatest cycling
champions
The disclosures have shocked a nation
that
thought it knew everything about Anquetil."

The French didn't like him, and he was booed (or is it whistled at)
when
he won one of his tours. In fact, the French disliked him for the same
reason that many of them dislike Armstrong. Things started improving
only
when he won the Dauphine / Bordeaux-Paris double and after
when he did TV commentary. Of course, I am referring to the sub human
sports fans, anyone who understood cycling appreciated him.

Your quote refers to the recent book by his daughter, which is much
more sordid than anything Gaumont etc. could dish out. As far as I can
tell,
it was a commercial flop and was identified with the other horrible
tell all
book by Benjamin Castaldi, grandson of Simone Signoret, and which
almost
destroyed his career as reality TV show host. The Anquetil book only
shocked the nation by the horribleness of its author in a country where
the private life of public figures is not considered to be very
relevant.

There's a lot of deep dark secrets hidden in the basement of Cycling
history. Many are not even public knowledge. Whispered from insider to
insider, hidden from public examination. Like they say, "bicycling is the
devil's workshop."

let me get this straight. the french disliked Anquetil because he was a
winner, but not because he fathered a child from his daughter, and his sons
wife?

Essentially correct. France is the only country where Mary Kaye
Letourneau's
book has appeared, and the country where Roman Polansky is safe from
extradiction to the US. The best thing Armstrong did for his image in
France
was to ditch his wife and hook up with Cheryl Crow.=20

They thought LeMond was such a square. His Mom and Dad, watched him in
the tour, like it was a college football game. To the froggies LeMond was
as alien as you can get. If he would have been caught in bed with a 50 year
old woman, or a 13 year old girl, or both, he would have been hailed as a
hero. Instead he was just that weird american guy.
