Default Council to ban all traffic except cyclists.

Regarding the discussion concerning councils installing bus lanes, here is a
case of a council banning all vehicles from a road except cyclists for
reasons of pedestrian safety. Obviously, they don't regard cyclists as being
much of a risk to the peds.

It would seem that they have taken the trouble to read the various
Road Research Laboratory reports into cycling in pedestrian areas.
It is a pity many other councils seem not to have done so, or they
have but let the emotional arguments of some override the evidence.

I think you will find that it is only on match days that there are any
pedestrians in the area - so it will not alter the pedestrian/cyclist
mix one iota.

Stopping distances for bicycles do not appear in the HC ... and so
cannot be of any consequence.

Not so.

I think that if you thought about it you'd realise that on match days
there will be many thousands of pedestrians about so any risk will be
higher .. it's just that there is so much less risk from bicycles than
from other vehicles.

In which case - unfortunately it won't protect them from the cyclists
either on the road or on the pavements

Knob - the road is closed to *all* traffic on match days.
