The forthright "Vancouver" obviously refers to the older U.S. city, since there aren't even 130 million Canadians on the planet. Fifty-four forty, or fight! Polk for President! Erase the shame of 49 degrees north latitude! Cheers, Carl Fogel Just remember the last time you pick a fight with us we kicked you ass and burnt down the presidents home thats why it's called the white house now because they had to hide the scorch marks with white wash. Well, sort of. The "we" who "kicked the U.S.'s ass with the burning of the White House were British troops, not Canadians. And surprise, surprise, while it's true that the U.S. failed to accomplish its goal of the conquest of Canada (and by smoke and mirrors no less), the U.S. won the war politically. The treaty negotiations cut the Canadians and First Nations folks out of the negotiations entirely. Any land gained by British invasions were returned, and the Americans were given free rein in the West. According to Will Ferguson, author of the venerable Canadian History for Dummies (the only "Dummies" book ever to make a bestseller list) as well as How to be a Canadian, The Americans won. The Canadians broke even. The First Nations lost. So just remember that. -- JF "Here comes the lightening and here comes the thunder. Ride on the storm and take it to the sea. " - Jim Hunter |
