Betting on the Tour
I was looking at the Betfair site and noticed that you can either Back
a rider or Lay against him, which presents some interesting opportunities for arbitrage if you think the odds are out of line. But, that got me thinking about rider's ability to bet for or against themselves; even though you can't be sure you can win, you sure *can* be sure you're going to lose. Anybody know if professional riders are prohibited from betting on bike races? TIA. Tom Young |

Betfair also allows betting during a race right up until the winner crosses the line. That sheds some light on what Jens Voigt was talking to Riis about on the Giro stage- "Bjarne, put a bundle on Gomez Marchante to win the stage. I'm going to gift it to him." It was Garate. |

Right you are. I sit corrected. Juan Manuel Garate Cepa. Four names and I didn't get one of them right. Although I did manage to get 3 of 4 initials- José Angel Gómez Marchante |
