I propose a controlled test : Assemble a pack of 100 cyclists, 50 with
helmets, 50 with out, randomly spread out over the right lane of a typical
two lane road, though reasonably bunched together front to back to simulate
a large group ride. Then, to simulate actual riding conditions in Dallas
(where I ride), have a Lincoln Navigator or equivalent plow through the rear
of the pack at 50 mph on a 35 mph road, yelling "OUT OF THE WAY !!!! GET OFF
THE ROAD !!!". Then, simply count the bodies, with and with out helmets.

I very much suspect there will be statistically significant difference
there.

Crap. There needs to be some denial in there somewhere.

How about: "I very much suspect there will not be statistically
significant difference there."

Apparently there are still people who are convinced that bike

helmets
save a detectable number of lives when people are hit by 50 mph

cars.
Amazing!

But the Delta-v may be 20mph in the OP's scenario. You never
know, a helmet might work there -- especially if it is an aero
helmet. You could tuck in and sprint up to a Delta-v of a few
miles per hour. Hey, its Texas. They all ride fast there.

Once I got rear-ended by a bus that was going about two miles an
hour faster than I was. The bumper caught me on the left calf
and pushed me along. It was sort of surrealistic -- I felt like a
hood ornament. The bus slowed, and I ended up getting pushed
into a parked car and bumped my elbow. My helmet saved my
life. -- Jay Beattie.

What, by making you more visible to the bus driver?

True story, but the part about the helmet was a joke. I should have
known better than to joke on any thread involving helmets. -- Jay

Helmets probably help -- that's why I usually wear one. For sure they
help from scrapes and cuts, and maybe sometimes even concussions.
They might even save lives or prevent permanent injury sometimes. But
there is no way that the majority of "the helmet saved my life"
stories coudl be true. It's not plausible.

I figure that a crash survivor whose helmet prevented his demise
would sustain a head injury mandating admission to a hospital.
