Bicycle opponent arrested for assaulting cyclist June 3, 2010 2:00 pm by Frances Dinkelspiel Michael J. Vandeman has long had a thing about mountain bikers. For more than a decade the Berkeley resident has been railing against them in Internet chat rooms and on environmental or bicycling websites. He maintains a number of websites where he complains that mountain bikers destroy important habitats and should be banned. He calls them one of his “peeves”. Vandeman’s vendetta seemed to be a verbal one. Until recently. UC Berkeley police arrested Vandeman, 67, *on May 28 after he allegedly attacked a bicyclist with a handsaw on a fire trail above the UC Berkeley campus. Vandeman also allegedly confronted another bicyclist in the same area in the summer of 2009 and used a sharp tool to puncture his tire. Vandeman was arraigned Wednesday and is being held on $12,500 bail in the Oakland city jail. “This guy is a well-known kook in the mountain biking community,” said Brent Englund, president of the Bicycle Trails Coalition of the East Bay. Can you say "charges dismissed"? Sorry to disappoint you. Brent Englund said he didn't think I would attack anyone. He was, of course, right. But gun nuts like you wouldn't understand.... Can you say "found guilty on 3 out of 6 charges"? But not really guilty, as you well know. Can you say "30 days on the Sherriff’s Work Alternative Program (S.W.A.P.)"? No, only 22 days, numbskull, and no real "punishment" for someone like me, who picks up trash for a hobby. The judge was no fool (unlike the mountain bikers). You were sentenced to 30 days, minus JAIL TIME served. People with "charges dismissed" do not serve jail time or 3 years probation. Yes, they do. The jail time was pre-trial. Three of the charges were dismissed. Sorry to disappoint you. Can you say "3 years probation which includes a “Stay Away” order for trails in the Claremont Canyon Reserve and the UC Berkeley hiking trails." Report Michael J. Vandeman if you see him violating his probation order. Staying away from criminal mountain bikers is no punishment, either.. In fact, it's a PLEASURE. The REAL message of this affair is that mountain bikers are willing to purjure themselves, in order to punish someone for blowing the whistle on their criminal activities. Can there be any lower scum? I doubt it. Stay off the trails, Michael J Vandeman, that's the REAL message. Michael J. Vandeman, BANNED!!!! Not really, only certain trails frequented by illegal mountain bikers. There are plenty of others. Sorry to disappoint you. AGAIN. You must be very frustrated. But, hey, thanks for demonstrating just how rabid, vicious, and vindictive mountain bikers are. That will do you cause a lot of good... If you see Mike *in the Claremont Canyon Reserve or the UC Berkeley hiking *trails, report him because he is banned from them. only after hanging him by his whitie-tighties from a limb stump about 6 feet off the ground. seriously - wouldnt you just love to be met by him with a saw in his hands? what was he doing in the woods with a saw anyway? illegally cutting native growth? |
