Default Anyone used a Cateye Triple shot?

I've been following the threads about building a light with luxeons but just
curious if anyone has actually bought / used one of the Triple shot luxeon
lights from Cateye.

I do all of my midweek riding before dawn and at the moment I'm using a
Cateye EL500 which is just 'ok' so long as I follow a white line on the road
and the road isn't wet.

Via the internet I can get one of these Triple shots delivered for under
AU$300 and I'm tempted!

I have two friends with the Triple Shots and I use twin 5 watt Luxeons
and another friend runs twin 5 watt luxeons of my design.
The triple shots have a narrower and slightly brighter beam but I think
my luxeons produce more light overall. $300 sounds like a good price but
I'd still prefer my home-made lights. How many watts are the triple shots?

The triple shots are 3x3watt luxeons - supposedly as bright as a 20 watt
halogen. I thought there was supposed to be a problem with the 5w luxeons
and how long they last??

$300 or thereabouts is a lot of cash for a light but since I do so much
early riding I'm looking for feedback - I don't know anyone with one
personally so your feedback is appreciated.

I've been mountain bike riding regularly for the last two years or so
with my Twin 5 Watt Luxeons and they're still going strong. I average
about two night rides a week of about two to three hours duration. I
think they run a bit warmer than recommended but without any ill
effects. From experience I can say that talk of short life spans for
luxeons is either ignorance or scare mongering.

Hi Friday

What lenses are you using for the luxeons? I am just about to order
some K2's and pucks from www.luxeonstar.com. I already have a Cateye
stadiumIII and just want a helmet light to point where I aim it. I'll
most probably make up a couple of torches for fun as well.

Cheers

Geoff

I just bought a Cygo Dualcross 300 dual Luxeon unit
(http://www.cygolite.com/2-Products/1-DualCross300.htm) from AEBike in the
US for $US138. Comes with a smart charger that won't bugger the battery. Two
rather than three light units but less than half the price of the Cateye.

If you look at the manufacturers documentation, the lumen maintenance
characteristics for the Luxeon V are steeper than those of the Luxeon I or
Luxeon III. i.e. Time for max output to fall to 50% of new is much shorter
but still in the thousands of hours range.

The new lens holders might be better. I used PVC pipe.
