Riding home down Oxford Street/Wilmslow Road in Manchester I came across a load
of cones blocking half the road and big ****-off signs saying 'ROAD CLOSED' and
'DIVERSION' with an arrow pointing down a side street. I also saw a load of
cars attempting to drive on the wrong side of the road against the oncoming
traffic. They travelled about, ooh, 50metres before they all got stuck. The
best bit was that they couldn't get out again 'cos there was no-where to turn
and the car at the back couldn't see that the one at the front was stuck.

Just proves what I've always thought - a lot of drivers are just
sheep. They don't think they, just follow the one in front,
usually too close.

After thinking long about a signature I've decided not to bother.

Once upon a time roadworks restricted one of the London bridges - I forget
which - to one lane northbound. The other lane is coned off, but Captain
Clueless decides he and his supersonic Golf GTi will use it anyway. Zoom
zoom he Goes, until brought to a sudden and permanent halt by the four foot
deep hole someone had thoughtlessly left lying around just where the road
reached terra firma once more. Passing cyclists - including my mate Ian -
point and laugh.

My fave, from a couple of years ago:

So we're all driving along the A6, a day after a heavy snowfall: the
road's been cleared, but we're Proceeding With Caution. The road
widens into a dual carriageway; and the Big German Car, who's
presumably bored with travelling at a mere 35mph, instantly pulls out
to overtake the queue. What he hasn't observed is that the right-hand
lane hasn't been cleared, and still has a foot of virgin snow in it.
Deceleration from 60-0 in a few yards, and a slow dwindling to nothing
in everybody else's rear view mirror.

so when your luck deserts you in some fashion
don't think you've been abandoned in your prime
but rather that you're saving up your ration.

One I spotted a couple of years ago around Pinner:
- dustbin truck collecting dustbins - hazards on
- car approaching goes to overtake it
- dustbin truck moves on (hazards still flashing, not indicators)
- van coming the other way
- driver realises he's not going to make it, with nowhere left to go
he totals the keep left sign in the central refuge

I saw the start of it as I cycled by in the other direction,
heard the end of it, luckily the only casualties were the keep
left sign and the driver's pride.

Someone tried a similar thing near Larrington Towers a few years ago, but as
well as the pride and the Keep Left side, he also murdered a lamp post. His
motorcar ended up lying on its back as if to have its axles tickled...

A couple of days after Mark posted this I was riding in the opposite
direction (north) along the same road in the early evening. I nearly fell
off my bike laughing when I saw there were two cycle cops going along this
line of idiots booking them.
