Pretty surprised at the price of bicycle specific degreaser.

Does anyone use a "more available/cheaper" product than those sold
as bike degreasers?

Depends what you're degreasing - diesel and an old paint brush is good
for declagging your winter bike, followed up with car shampoo (a quid in
ASDA/Wilko/etc.) if a wipe with an oily rag isn't good enough.

To remove all (accessible) traces of oil or grease from most things
I use an ammonia(under £2 at Homebase about the only place you can
find it except online)/water/Tesco/budget shampoo(40p) mixture applied
with an old washing up brush.

It wouldn't surprise me if most of the branded products are simply
ammonia tarted up in various ways. The ammonia will remove all traces
of oiliness. I usually use around a 1:4 solution and the budget
shampoo
is added to make it a bit more thixotropic. It stinks like hell but
may
be beneficial if you have a cold I suppose.

It's then all washed off with a hose or similar and allowed to
thoroughly
dry out. I've reassembled one side of bottom bracket shell dry after
this treatment as it was showing a tendency to unwind and have
had no problems with it since. Though I haven't had to remove it
either.
