Default Star-fangled Nut sliding in steerer tube

I've had my LBS install a star-fangled nut inside my 1" chromoly Time
Milennium road fork. When I went to tighten it down the top cap (after
installing the headset, of course) to remove the play so I could tighten the
stem, I noticed that the star nut inside the steerer tube was sliding up
and would not stay in place. I've never had this happen before. What's the
fix for this? I'm going to try another star nut, but thought this was most
unusual. Any magic fixes for this?

Thanks in advance,
AB

Is it in upside down for some strange reason?

1" star nuts are different (larger) diameter for CrMo
steerers than for (smaller) aluminum steerers. Ask your
friendly LBS service manager to take another look at it.
He'll probably break the wrong one to remove it and swap for
the right size.

Woodman magic...

I use the Capsule Extreme on my downhill racing bike. Nice and secure.
Overkill for a road bike however.

I say-get the old one oput and install one that's the proper size. Sounds like
they may have installed one for a 1 inch aluminum thick walled steerer, not a
22.2mm steel steerer.

Another thing to check for...

Is the top cap topping out on the steerer tube? If it is, it'll pull the
star nut out before the play in the stack is removed. The steerer tube
needs to be at least 3mm below the top of the stem. It shouldn't take much
torque to preload the headset.
