Default Indexing front shifter

Can I change a crankset on an indexed front system from a triple to
another different triple? Thanks

Usually.

Though I'd be sure to stick with ramped and pinned rings that are size-
coordinated with each other and with the FD. Such matters are
unimportant with friction front shifting, but it makes a HUGE
difference for front indexing.

As long as you're not changing the size of the chainrings, and you're
staying with a crank designed for indexed shifting (which is basically
any modern crank), you'll probably be OK.

What are you changing from & to?

I was planning to change the rings from 28-38-48 to 22-32-42

The gaps between rings are the same, which is the biggest concern.
Might be a little slow on the middle-small shifts, since the chain
will be deflected farther back from the ring than if you had a right-
sized FD. What model shifter is it?

You could have a couple of issues. First, when you drop the front
derailleur so it's at the proper height for the 42t large chainring, the
derailleur may end up being so low that it hits on the chainstay.
Second, the derailleur cage is made with a 48t chainring in mind, so its
curvature isn't going to match the smaller size of the 42t. This can
cause problematic shifting.

The only way you're going to know is to try it. If it's not indexed,
it's got a reasonable chance. Indexed systems, on the other hand, aren't
so tolerant of less-than-ideal configurations.
