... I need an inexpensive bike for the road..just for exercise. Maybe a speed bike but I have long legs and need a bigger bike. What brands do you suggest? The 18 sped I have now is too small for my size. Hey Bryan, I took the liberty to cross-post your message to rec.bicycles.misc, which is probably a more fitting newsgroup, and also has a higher readership than rec.bicycles.rides. First off, you need to tell us: what do you mean by "inexpensive"? Some people here would define "inexpensive" as ~$100, others as ~$1000. I'll leave the "go to your LBS" instructions to someone else. -- Warm Regards, Claire Petersky please substitute yahoo for mousepotato to reply Home of the meditative cyclist: http://home.earthlink.net/~cpetersky/Welcome.htm Personal page: http://www.geocities.com/cpetersky/ See the books I've set free at: http://bookcrossing.com/referral/Cpetersky |

It has a 23" frame, with 700c -40 street tires. My bike cost me $300 at a Local Bike Shop. I started riding with a Huffy mountain bike from K-Mart which was really too small and it was the largest they had. |

I have a friend who is 6'10" and looks malnourished at 300 pounds. He also has a problem with getting bikes to fit and not looking silly on one. Of course he manages to make a Harley look small, so he rides motors, not pedals. Another friend is about 300 pounds and only about 5'11" and rides Cannondales exclusively. He says they never break under his weight, but then he is not a terribly agressive rider. FWIW, anything over $200 is expensive to me whether I have the cash or not. That is the break point where I start to think of computer/car/whatever upgrades. Isn't 6'7" and 255 lbs. kind of on the skinny side? Cyclist build maybe? My friend that is 6'9" or 10" bonks his head it he doesn't duck going from room to room in the house. He is skinny at 300 and no, not a cyclist build, he is at sumo level right now and over 400, which makes him look like a biker, Harley type. The point behind my comment is that the BMI thing is wrong and should be going by the cube of the individuals height, not the square. Think about the math. He doesn't ride bicycles right now because he can't find one to fit him without looking silly. At 58 and with gray hair he wants to maintain his health but also some semblance of dignity. Back to whatever we were talking about. I believe the OP was one of those too tall people. Bill Baka |

At his age, he should have mastered the whole ducking thing a while ago. He is skinny at 300 and no, not a cyclist build, he is at sumo level right now and over 400, which makes him look like a biker, Harley type. I see a lot of those guys on the rural roads I ride in the summer. They're almost way overweight like your friend. The point behind my comment is that the BMI thing is wrong and should be going by the cube of the individuals height, not the square. Think about the math. Perhaps you should contact the government and get the tables corrected. They work for me though. He doesn't ride bicycles right now because he can't find one to fit him without looking silly. I believe the OP was one of those too tall people. No such thing (unlike ignorance). |
