Almost Turned Down By Bloodmobile for 45 Pulse Rate
After getting over a flu like illness over the holidays the asthma seemed to be more or less in remission as well. Finally! I could train harder and find out if it was possible to get back into shape. I cycled and swam laps both w/ some intervals, checking systolic and rest pulse rate every morning in bed. The BPM started off at 40 +/- 1 or 2 and stayed there for 3 weeks then dropped to 35 the following week and stayed there. I had originally figured it would take 3 - 5 months to reach that goal.
Then, after getting and recovering from a second flu like illness the pulse rate had started to creep up again, back to 40. A week after that it was time to donate blood. I always cycle to the hospital to donate blood and that little bit of exercise is apparently enough to meet their 50 beats/min requirement. Driving would probably get it up as well but for other reasons. Last week a stiff North wind blew me there, however, and I got no exercise whatsoever. The aid took my blood pressure and said that my rest pulse rate was too low.. I told him I was deliberately trying to get it down. My theory is you only get 2 billion beats out of your heart so the slower the pulse rate the longer you live. He said he'd try to contact Sandy Eggo for an OK. I suggested I could cycle around the block and come back in 5 minutes and he could take it again. I went to the river and sprinted up the short bank and returned ready to show off my 50 bpm rate but by then he said that we had gotten permission. He was apologetic as I left. I wondered if he really did get through to anyone in San Diego. Bret Cahill .. |

My lowest was 56bpm in 2010 when I cycled to work. Now I am retired it is 72, but at least my weight is only 182lbs. I was never a powerful cyclist, maybe doing OK only on hill climbs. I only really excel at efficient swimming, swim fast in hot water. Swimming and cycling make a good combination but cycling has some major advantages over swimming. It's not nearly as boring so you can do it longer w/o going crazy. It's also cleaner. Health care types tend to avoid the local municipal pool because of the unreliable pool chemistry, pH 5 water, ear and other infections. I get ideas when I have some kind of visual input along with the exercise, something more interesting than a black line. Driving provides video but only cycling provides both at the same time. The worst thing about cycling is flat tires. I asked a mechanic at the local bike shop for a solution. He said never got flats with Schwalbe Marathon. |

I tried the Marathon+ for a while, they were too heavy with high rolling resistance If you have bad knees (like me) and like to sprint through yellow lights (like me), the moment of inertia of the wheel needs to be less than that of the planet Jupiter. Nevertheless the Schwalbe solution needs to be considered, at least as a starting point. It may be worth bad knees. and appeared to be teflon coated. That could be a plus. I once coated the bead of a tire with some gunky sealant and then wrapped / coated it with Teflon tape. It slid onto the rim so easily that tools were not required. This needs to be investigated as well. The valve cover gasket on my vehicle always leaked. Instead of buying a new one which I knew would leak I wrapped the old one with 2 layers of Teflon tape and that finally stopped the leak. I then went Teflon crazy wrapping distributor O-rings, fuel pump gaskets and it worked every time. Not one drop of oil on the drive way. They need to wrap everything with Teflon at the factory. Frittatas come out perfectly on a cheap Teflon-fiberglass disk. I think I will stick with Panaracer Pasela. TIP: Avoid Panaracer RiBiMo. |
