Many years ago, I was cycling after dark and a woman stopped me to ask
whether I could see a bollard on a cycle way. I simply answered "no,
you
have to know it's there". I would have had a Never Ready front lamp at
that
time. The answer satisfied her and we didn't engage in further
conversation.

Don't make assumptions.

Are you ****ing blind or something?

Are you stupid or something? I doesn't occur to you to wonder why a woman
might be standing in near darkness waiting to ask someone?

She was out walking her dog, saw the bollard, saw the cyclist, and assumed
he was blind?

No. It is not possible to convey the tone of the conversation in text but
I'm surprised it is needed. I know it's difficult but you should try to
distinguish real world from newsgroup world. Should you go outdoors the sky
will not fall on your head.

Could somebody post a link showing the cycle path with a lamp post in
the middle? Stockingstone Road is quite long but I have looked at
several sections on Google Street View and can't find where this guy
would legally be on the footway.

Of course I am sure that there is no connection with the incident
taking place at closing time!

I reckon it would be going down the hill, cyclists have terrible
difficulties with them, frequently ending up dead wrapped round a gate,
lamp-post, fence post etc.

There is no reference to any cyclists in the link you posted, why did
you feel the need?

If people were continually banging on to you about the harbour
hardware that sail boat captains inexcusably rammed their boats into
wouldn't you be inclined (or even tempted) to point out that such
inexplicable behaviour wasn't by any means restricted to users of that
particular viable means of transport?

Ah! That explains the reason, then, how I can understand why the need

So you don't have a better reasoning then? Mine was totally plausible.

It's a laugh, isn't it? This group, I mean. I believe I did once
make the mistake of taking it a little too seriously... but now it's
much more fun.

It was funnier when Captain Trollbuster was around. Shame he ran away.

Why do I need to explain, I asked why you posted a news story about
cars, with no cycle content, to a cycle newsgroup? You are unable to
give an explanation.

Why do I need to explain...

You do not need to explain anything, and I certainly have not asked
you to do so.

I asked why you posted a news story about
cars, with no cycle content, to a cycle newsgroup?

I did not post that news story (which was on topic, in my view, to
this group).

You are unable to give an explanation.

I tell you what, let me try again, please:

You asked the person who posted that news story (which you say is
about cars, with no cycle content, to a cycle newsgroup) why they felt
the need to do that.

In my view, that person felt the need to demonstrate that it is not
only cyclists who in inexplicably collide with inanimate objects. It
is us human beings who are in command of any mode of transport
(whether it be a bicycle, car, sailing boat, roller skates or
whatever) who for seemingly inexplicably reasons are capable of
colliding with inanimate objects.
