Default Those four dollar nashbar saddles...

Got two of em in the mail today, perhaps I should have got half a dozen
for the price, there's always a junker bike laying around that could use a
fresh seat in everybody's garage.

It's a blast from the past, a Selle Royal Prestige, with very little
padding, a fairly long and broad nose, and seemingly large "sweet spot".
The plastic shell appears to be rather supple though. The leather covering
is gorgeous stuff, even comes with a little tag to let the german speakers
know that this is real "leder". The look is very 1978.

I swapped out the Brooks Flyer on the SS for one, which gave me a pound
back, and should mitigate the bounce the Brooks gave on that ride. Flyers
really aren't meant for hunched over bikes anyway. I'm about to go for a
little 20 miler and I'll report back on how this vintage perch compares.
I'm looking forward to some out of the saddle time, as the Brooks was very
noticeably heavy when swinging the bike.

Did around 25 miles on this piece of vintage kit. Very very nice! Great
support, and that's rare for me to say about racing saddles (I've got
widely spaced ischia) Lots of room to move around, just enough padding to
sink in a couple mm and feel secure, but not enough to get numb. The
plastic shell reminds me a lot of how a well broken in Brooks Pro feels
without the horrible rivets. Goes perfectly with my vintage bike, and the
real leather feels great. Probably not the thing for a town bike, but
great on something racy. 260g and four bucks. Glad I got two. :P

Very nice. Congrats on your fortunate find.

Y'know, the saddles my butt likes the most are those old
flat, pleather things that ubiquitously came with early
'70s "ten speeds". The ones with that cross-hatching
made to resemble light diamond tufting. Aesthetically
I like their simple lines. Ergonomically I like their
flatness. I've got a few ratty-looking ones, and one
that if it were a collectable coin, I think could rate
somewhere between Very Good Condition, and Uncirculated.
Except the previous/original owner Armor-All'd it. But
it looks nice & shiny. I used to have a really pretty one
with chromed coil springs, but I gave it away along with
a fixer-upper bike (I don't need sprung saddles.) Anyhow,
those are the saddles I'm keeping a weather-eye open for.
It's sure tough to find any in nice condition.

cheers,
Tom

Site says 290 grams (and butt ugly), but for 4 bucks it's hard to quibble...

Beats the 900g or so of the Brooks (a great saddle to be remounted on a
more fitting ride). Ugly? It's saddle shaped and black leather, your ass
covers it so who really cares what it looks like? LOL What I find ugly is
cycle stoff that's got all this stitching and flutes and whatnot that
serve no purpose--like you find on most modern saddles, ridiculous
stylings that are supposed to insinuate performance.

Dammit, I'm gonna get defensive about my four dollar saddle. :P

Looks like a normal saddle to me. As you say, clean styling.
At least it's not a tractor seat.

I see they've got a suede version too, but I didn't
check the price. Suede is getting a little too exotic
for me (and possibly too exotic for the PNW climate.)

cheers,
Tom

Very cool.

I mean, really how wrong can you go at $4? Heck, buy 10 and keep them for
all the fixer-uppers you're giving to friends...

BTW: take a look at this link http://www.spongywonder.com/

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?!

LMAO!

Now that you mention it, "spongy" sounds suspiciously like a link to
erectile-dysfunction! LOL!

Man... can you imagine sliding forward and impaling yourself on the rails?
That CAN'T be a healthy seat...

C.

I certainly could imagine that, but I choose not to. I will, however,
cross my legs now and think of baseball.
