Erie Canal bike trails
We were thinking about riding some of the trails along the
Erie Canal, but someone mentioned that they read somewhere that the trails are rough, and knobby tires are needed. Can anyone that has ridden the trails comment? I have the narrow cruising tires and changing to knobby tires may be a problem on this bike (yes, I can always get another bike). Any other first hand information about riding the canals, special places to visit (or avoid), etc. would also be nice. Thanks, |

Can anyone that has ridden the trails comment? I rode the Erie Canal trail as much as possible between Rochester and Lockport a few years ago. Some of it was closed for maintenance at the time, but the parts that were open were nice - I had 32mm tires on the (heavily loaded) bike. Around Greece, NY, there was a paved part that was quite rough due to tree-roots breaking through. The non-paved parts were better. Lots of pleasant little towns with nice cafes and diners. If I did that route again, all the cooking gear would stay home. |

Most of it crushed gravel and very nice to ride. Only the section around Rochester was a bit rougher - although paved there were potholes and tree roots. We did all that on 32C tires without problems. Narrower tires should be perfectly ok, but I wouldn't try your slick 19 mm racing tires. Have a great ride, enjoy the scenery and the nice little towns with friendly B+Bs along the way. Bengt-Olaf. |
