What would a 2006 Schwinn Varsity look like (if done right)?

I imagine the perfect college bike for four years of an awesome college life, with a little flexibility for life beyond. Almost like a Surly Cross-Check but even more versatile. Something can be more versatile than the Cross-Check? Cross Check with a flask and cage? Ron |

I think it might be hard to hit that $500 nut. I priced something
similar out at my local LBS a couple of weeks ago. Used Trek cross frame (great older True Temper edition...double eyelets front and back + racking brazes front and back and canti mounts), Nexus 8 speed hub, Shimano dynamo and light, various tradeoffs for crank, brakes, wheels... but it came to $450. No seat, pedals or fenders by the way. |

What about belt drive instead of a chain for that hub? I've seen it on
folders and I don't see any reason a toothed belt wouldn't be optimal for diamond frame bikes. No gook, no problem. |

You mean one of these...
http://www.jimlangley.net/spin/beltdrive_lg.jpg I guess so, as long as you could stand on the pedals. Beats a dirty chain, probably keeps paint on the stay better too. |

"Will" wrote in message oups.com... Well... I never thought I'd say this, but I think the frame should be aluminum. The bike will be outside more than inside. I also think the drivetrain should use an internal hub, less danger at the bike rack, cleaner too. Finally I think there should be a dynamo hub. Light is important, this is a commuter/utility machine. A Surly could do it all, but if you're looking at a budget, I'm not sure how you beat a Breezer. Aluminum would work. The stiffness of the frame could be offset by the cushiness of the tires. Internal hub is a great idea, as is the dynamo. Getting kind of pricy there, though. |

That's why if we use an internal hub or dynamo, it's gotta be generic Schwinn. Still, I'd favor more conventional parts to keep initial cost down, even at the expense of ruggedness. I wish I had CAD to draw this thing out for fun. |

The Bianchi Castro Valley is pretty close to the price point. It's not readily tourable, though. Well, it could be if one was lightly loaded. It even comes with the dynamo light. I wouldn't count on Schwinn at all. I predict that their bike shop line will eventually die off in favor of the 'mart bikes. Bianchi could probably do it, though. |

Last time I went bike shopping in Sweden, it seemed that 3-4 speed Shimano hubs were very very common on $300 entry level town bikes. They can't cost more than fifty bucks wholesale. The eight speed hubs are definitely prohibitive. Alu frame is a good idea, even tho I prefer steel. |
