Default Peugeot rear derailleur hanger?

I was out cycling with my friend at the weekend and the rear
derailleur on his Peugeot Pulse road bike (2000 model) sheared off.
He's since been told that the part is unobtainable.

Has anybody got any idea where he could get a spare hanger from? It
seems crazy to scrap the frame after only 3 years for want of a small
part which is designed to fail to protect the frame...

thanks,

Justin

I have no experience of rear mech hangers failing, I've had a few bend
and I have carefully bent them back into their proper position. Ones
that are part of the frame, as opposed to bolt on, which I suspect you
'friend' has are not designed to break off, in my 20 odd years of
riding road irons I have never had one break under normal use. The
ones that got bent have been as a result of tranporting the bike in
planes and cars.

If its a steel frame, a frame builder might be able to braze a
replacement or the original back on. Take a look at Bob Jacksons
website for an idea, he used to have a list of prices for all frame
jobs - then maybe find someone more local.

Have you considered a cheap clamp-on hanger as found on the more modest end of
Shimano's offerings?

Apparently Campagnolo make spares for all the common designs,
alternatively botch one of those ones which is designed to slide in
the dropout?

The shape of these things can vary so you need to make sure any
replacement either is made for that specific model or looks the same (a
suitable one may be intended for another make/model). Try local bike
shops first.

I suspect this isn't that uncommon a problem. I broke the mech hanger on
my Mantra (through sheer foolishness), and when I emailed Trek to find
out where to get a new one got the response that they had no new ones,
but they did have a second hand one which they sent me free of charge.
The Mantra has only been out of production at most four years, and as a
serious mountain bike will presumably break hangers more frequently
than road bikes.

This looks like quite a nice line of business for someone with a small
CNC milling machine - I imagine people would pay quite a lot for
replacement mech hangers for favourite bikes (I certainly would), and
if you simply bought spare mech hangers for all the good current
generation bikes and reverse engineered them then in future you could
turn them out at a substantial premium.

Meantime, it you have a favourite bike which uses a mech hanger, go out
and buy a spare one (or even more) now, before they go out of
production.

Humm. 'These are stronger than the originals'. Sorry, that's the point.
We don't want them to be stronger than the originals. They're
sacrificial parts.

This really spooky, I looked at this thread on Google groups this morning,
there was a sponsors link for derailleurhanger.com
