Default "ASTREA transports injured biker [spinal injury]"

\http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/new...red_bike.html:

The sheriff's ASTREA helicopter was called Saturday morning to
transport a 34-year-old man who suffered a suspected spinal-cord
injury in a mountain biking accident just north of Palomar College. An
ambulance could not reach him, authorities said.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. Because of the rugged terrain on
the mountain, which is marked with "P" for the college, San Marcos
Fire Department personnel requested that ASTREA pilots fly the victim
from the mountain.

The man was secured to a backboard and flown to waiting paramedics at
the north end of Las Posas Road in San Marcos.

A dispatcher with the San Marcos Fire Department said the injured man
was with a friend who called 911 when the accident occurred. A GPS
device on the cell phone aided ASTREA in finding the two, both from
San Marcos.

The injured man was taken to the trauma unit at Palomar Medical
Center, the dispatcher said.
He added he was unsure how the accident occurred. "I'm not sure if he
went down in loose gravel or what," the dispatcher said.

So much for the health benefits of hiking...

San Diego County Sherrif's Department Helicopter Rescues Injured
Swimmer
Monday, June 02, 2008 - San Diego County Sherrif's Department

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On 6-1-08 at about 4:13 pm the Sheriff's patrol helicopter "Astrea 3"
was dispatched to a call of an injured hiker/swimmer at "Devil's Punch
Bowl." Devil's Punch Bowl is often confused with Cedar Creek Falls
which is frequented by many more hikers, (Cedar Creek Falls is about a
4 mile hike from the east end of the San Diego Country Estates in
Ramona). It was reported that the victim was suffering from a neck
injury incurred while jumping or diving into the water.

Astrea 3, piloted by Deputy S. Sterner and with Deputy Kimball as the
Tactical Flight Officer, responded to Cedar Creek Falls and located
the victim next to the pool at the base of the falls.

Astrea 3 then flew direct to the Ramona Cal-Fire Station 81 (in the
Ramona Country Estates) and picked up Cal-Fire Paramedic Robert
Price. Astrea 3 returned and landed near the base of Cedar Creek
Falls within a short hike from the victim. The helicopter crew and
paramedic hiked to the victim's location and began rendering aid.

An unidentified foreign female doctor who also happened to be hiking
at the falls, and a local unidentified off duty EMT were both tending
to the victim. The two had fashioned a temporary cervical collar from
towels a belt and a foam board.

A Sheriff's department fire/hoist helicopter "Astrea 10" also
responded hoisting down one Cal-Fire rescuer/EMT and rescue quipment.

The victim, Micah Retz (35) of Alpine, was hoisted aboard Astrea 10
and flown to a Mercy Air helicopter which was waiting nearby.

Though the victim was conscious, his condition is unknown at this
time.

Default "ASTREA transports injured hiker."

On 06-18-08 at about 1540 hours, San Diego Sheriff’s Department
helicopter, ASTREA 3 was dispatched to assist State Parks in
attempting to locate a lost hiker near Villager Peak in the Anza
Borrego State Park. ASTREA 3 Pilot Scott Sterner and Tactical Flight
Officer Darryl Kimball arrived and began searching the trail around
1615 hours with the help of several park rangers, deputy sheriff’s and
a State Parks fixed wing aircraft.

The hiker, Alicia Borgongo, a 28 year old hearing impared female from
San Diego was last heard from by her mother at 1511 hours by a text
message. The only information rescuers had to go on was she was lost
in a sandy area and she was taking shelter from the sun next to a
bush, then her cell phone went dead.

The search encompassed about a 12 square mile area. Initial responding
park rangers picked up her tracks beginning at her vehicle near the
trail head. Not far after Alicia’s tracks left the trail, her tracks
went cold for nearly an hour before being picked up again by another
expert tracker from the State Parks Service almost 4 miles from the
trail she was originally on. At this time the search had been going on
for over 3 hours in temperatures upwards of 112 degrees.

ASTREA 3 began low level flying to pick up Alicia’s tracks in the sand
and with in a few minutes the crew located her. Alicia was in fair
condition and the crew transported her to an awaiting ambulance. Her
condition at this time is unknown.

suffering from heat exhaustion. At about 4:14 p.m. the crew arrived on
scene and located a 50 year-old female. She was about half a mile down
the trail leading up to Ramona. The crew landed their MD500D
