Blocked bike lanes.
All cyclists will have encountered cycle lanes illegally blocked by
parked cars but the police seem to do little about it and it is ignored most of the time and it happens in many cities around the world. Motorists seem to imagine they have more of a right to use roads than cyclists. A cyclist in NY decided to do something about it and here is the result. "Casey Neistat smashes blocked NY bike lanes A New York City filmmaker and cyclist has launched a painful online crusade to push authorities to ticket motorists who park in bike lanes. In May, a policeman gave Casey Neistat a $50 (£31) fine for riding in a traffic lane, dismissing his plea that the bike lane was dangerously blocked. To prove his point, Mr Neistat created a video in which he is shown crashing into a series of bike lane obstacles. The video has become a YouTube hit, garnering almost a million views. In the video, Mr Neistat crashes into a taxi, a traffic cone, construction kit and finally, a police car - none of which he had placed there for the video shoot..." Vehicle excise duty is around 6bn. You are conveniently forgetting fuel duty, insurance tax levy, and also VAT on both. Add it all up and we are looking at well over £30 billion PA coughed up by motorists. Any road user not making a contribution in any of these ways has little in the way of justification criticising those who do! |

Vehicle excise duty is around 6bn. You are conveniently forgetting fuel duty, insurance tax levy, Insurance tax levy also applies to other insurance, so it's not a 'tax on motorists'. and also VAT on both. We all pay VAT, it's not a 'tax on motorists' either. Add it all up and we are looking at well over £30 billion PA coughed up by motorists. Short of his £80bn then, as I thought. Any road user not making a contribution in any of these ways has little in the way of justification criticising those who do! The tax on motorist goes to the governments revenue, it's not kept aside for roads. It pays off the national debt, pays for schools, hospitals and many other things Roads are funded and maintained from the Council Tax and general taxation. So, as taxpayers, cyclists have just as much 'right' to use the roads as motorists. |
