Careful Andrew. You'll get blasted here for posting something that might hint that bicycling might be dangerous at times. ;)

Cheers

It's a popular cycling area, I've ridden that road a hundred
times myself. The whole idea of a 'newsworthy' event is
that this is an outlier.

A good point. Today's local paper had articles about a motorist
fatality and a pedestrian fatality. They were given about two column
inches each back around page 4, IIRC. I suspect a bicycling fatality
would have gotten quite a bit more coverage.

Motorist deaths are common. Pedestrian deaths are a bit less common.
Bike fatalities are rare enough to be "interesting." And of course,
they've always got to mention the "was not wearing a helmet" phrase -
unless the person _was_ wearing one, in which case "helmet" is usually
absent.

BTW, I'm on the local Safe Communities Coalition committee that examines
every local traffic fatality. I told them I'd attend only for bicyclist
fatalities. So far I've had to go to only one meeting, and that
bicyclist was A) drunk, B) Riding facing traffic C) in the shadow under
a bridge D) toward a freeway exit ramp, where the driver that hit him
was looking back over her shoulder to merge into traffic.

Of course but apparently we must repress even outliers or suffer the wrath
of the danger! danger! brigade.

And yet.
The girl who was abducted while riding a purple bicycle and
then murdered near Toledo in a hidden torture room in a hay
barn seems to have been a one-day headline. Despite having a
ridiculous television quality plot, it actually happened.

Was local Ohio coverage more extensive?
