Default wierd tire

Today I saw two tires which had the turtle pads
only on the sides, in the middle at the very
top they had two parallel, really
thin ( 0.5 mm) chutes that went around the
entire wheel.

With the tool used to reopen cable housing
after a cut, I managed to remove several
hundred very small stones from those chutes.
If I wasn't a perfectionist, I don't think
I would have enjoyed that

I suspect it has to do with a knobby tread.
