Default Crested Butte - westward

I have ridden to Crested Butte before. When leaving, I came back out
the way I came in, on highway 135. This time I would like to ride
westward out of Crested Butte to highway 133 (perhaps to Redstone).
It looks like there are two possibilities.

1. Gothic Road to Schofield Pass and then fire roads to Marble

2. The #12 Road along Coal Creek over Kebler Pass and towards Paonia
Reservoir

I have ridden both trails for some distance, but never up to the passes.

Has anyone here ever done this before? How "doable" is it? If I have
to do some walking (less than a mile) I'd be okay with that. I will be
riding a hybridized MTB and am anticipating camping somewhere below
either of the two passes (Schofield or McClure).

Schofield looks marvelously wild. McClure looks more straightforward.
