Torpedo 3 speed hub indexing help please

Dear All,

My wife's Brompton has a Torpedo (Spectro Sachs/Sram) 3 speed hub
which no longer seems to index.

Am I correct in assuming the indexing occurs with the shifter?

If so has the shifter worn out?

Or have I got to do something with the hub itself??

I had a quick look to see if I could find any answers online without
success.

Any ideas?

Do you mean it doesn't index at all (ie, you move the shifter and it
drops back to the extreme position), or that it clicks into place,
but that place does not correspond to a proper gear selection?

The former probably requires a new shifter (I don't know that
particular component, but I only know one hub key which has the
indexing at the hub). There's probably a tiny pawl or something
that's worn out or snapped, and necessitates a whole new mechanism.

The latter is probably an adjustment and/or replacement cables thing.

But I am speculating a bit - as I say, I don't know that particular
setup in detail.

Yes it doesn't appear to index at all, I'm assuming the lever has had
it then?

I might see if I can take the lever apart and repair if possible.

I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something simple and you've

Sounds like it.

I might see if I can take the lever apart and repair if possible.

You might be lucky - something might have jumped out of place or got
stuck rather than broken or worn away, but it's unlikely you'll get
parts for it if anything needs replacing.

It could be the cable that's dragging or slack rather than a problem
with the lever, if it works like the traditional Sturmey Archer kit.
Or it could be that the selector rod/arm/whatever is seized at the
hub. Just guessing, I never had much to do with those hubs and whatever
I knew I've forgotten.

I think that a broken, very slack, or jammed cable (with enough slack
on the lever side of the jam) may also produce that "free at the
lever" feeling.

When you pull the lever (even if it won't stay where you pull it to),
can you see the cable move back at the hub?

There were a couple of different levers over the years to go with that
hub, but the one that I am familiar with relied on tension from the
cable to keep the lever in the index slots.

This doesn't address the lever directly, but may be of some help in
chasing down the problem or getting it back into adjustment:

Sachs/SRAM have exploded views of their various hub gears on their
website.


From my experience the shifter on the 3 x 7 hub (a 3 speed hub with a
7 speed cassette attached), the internal gubbins are mostly plastic.
When I bust mine it refused to shift at all. Replacement was the way
to fix it.

However I'm a bit confused as to what the problem really is. What
happens when you twist the control? Does it change gear? Does it stay
changed?

I fixed it!

I took the shifter apart to discover the torsion spring had popped of
the ratchet catch so it wasn't ratcheting any more.

I popped it back on and it was fixed within 5 minutes.

If only all repairs were so simple!!
